Islay malts are often described as being smoky and medicinal 

Islay, like Speyside, is a mecca for whisky lovers. There are 8 operational distilleries and 1 silent distillery squeezed onto the island from the recently opened Kilchoman, reopened Bruichladdich and Ardbeg to Bowmore, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Laphroaig, Caol-Ila. Islay malts take their smoky flavour from the peat used for malting the barley used in their production of whiskies, Islay malts are often described as being smoky and medicinal, salty and 'seaweedy'.
