Strathearn’s inaugural release

Strathearn distillery is located in Highland Perthshire, an area with a rich Whisky distilling heritage owing to its spectacular landscape and freshwater lochs.

It was founded in 2013 as a micro-distillery, producing around 30,000L annually only. Six years later, in 2019, one of the oldest independent bottlers in Scotland, Douglas Laing & Co, had acquired Strathearn outright for an undisclosed sum of money.

Strathearn distillery uses a rare type a barley called Maris Otter barley which contributes distinctive flavours to the whisky. With unusually long fermentation of 144 hours and distilling in a slow and deliberate way, they profoundly bring to you a Single Malt Scotch Whisky of the utmost quality, refinement and character.

Strathearn’s inaugural release is a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry casks and virgin oak, with a maturation between six and eight years. Strathearn uniquely uses Maris Otter malt, mostly forgotten since the 1960s. This 2024 release is a composition of 32 casks. That’s it for this year, there will probably be no other releases for a while.

Nose: Anticipate a rich malted barley depth with gentle oak

Palate: Mouth-coating and syrupy influences of honey and buttercream with baking spice, milk chocolate and dried apricots 

Finish: Long, warming finish of home baking and buttery oat biscuits
